FEEDING AMERICA

feeding americaIn September 2008, America’s Second Harvest® changed its name to Feeding America™ . Feeding America, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization, is a network of more than 200 member food banks and food-rescue organizations including the Food Bank of South Jersey. Each year, the Feeding America network provides food assistance to more than 25 million low-income hungry people in the United States, including more than 9 million children and nearly 3 million seniors. Feeding America secures donations from the food and grocery industries, government agencies, individuals and other organizations. The organization then moves donated food and grocery products through member food banks, including the Food Bank of South Jersey, which ensures the safe storage and reliable distribution of donated goods to local charitable agencies. Donations are then provided to people in need at food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs, senior centers, and emergency shelters. Feeding America’s new name aligns with its mission to provide food to Americans suffering from hunger and directly conveys that the organization is providing access to food for people who need it. In essence, “feeding” serves as a double meaning—both providing food to and enriching the lives of those in need.
